Welcome to the 2012-2013 School Year from
The Winston PTO
Who and What is the Winston PTO?
The PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) is made up of all the parents and faculty at The Winston School. Our primary objective is to support the school and it’s students through volunteering and fundraising.
What kinds of things does the Winston PTO do?
Some of the many activities organized by the Winston PTO are:
- The PTO Weekly – a weekly newsletter emailed to all parents with current information about school events
- PTO Meetings – informative open meetings held monthly
- Class Parent Program – parents who assist teachers/students in various ways such as class parties, exam snacks, chaperones for school dances, etc.
- Baccalaureate Reception – following the ceremony
- Book Sale – fundraising sale of Used Books in the Spring benefitting the library
- Box Tops – fundraising through collection of Box Tops
- Crafternoons – crafting themed social events for students held after school in the Library
- Exam Readers – parents who serve as scribes or readers for Middle School and Upper School students who need accommodations
- Garage Sale – fundraising for the scholarship fund through a school wide Spring Garage Sale Hospitality – organizing snacks/treats for PTO events such as PTO meetings, Crafternoons, Teacher Appreciation week, etc.
- Library Guild – Organizing library volunteers & the Birthday Book program
- Socials - fun and unique sponsored social events that benefit The Winston School and strengthen our community at the same time. The money raised by a PTO Social goes to a designated cause at the school. For example, past Socials have raised funds for technology upgrades in the classroom, scholarship needs of existing students, and new books for the library.
- Teacher Appreciation - recognizing our outstanding teachers throughout the year including at birthdays, at a holiday and end-of-year luncheon and during Teacher Appreciation Week in April
- Teacher Wish List – Fundraising to help fund items specifically requested by Winston teachers for their classrooms
- Winston Cares – supporting families who are new to the school, celebrating a birth or dealing with a loss

Why Should a Parent be Involved with the PTO?
Hundreds of studies show that parent involvement can make a dramatic difference for your children - both in school atmosphere and in the success rate of students - when parents are included as partners in the educational process. Also, attending events and volunteering with the PTO is a great way to:
- Connect with other parents at Winston
- Stay informed on what’s happening at the school
- Further support your child’s education
I look forward to meeting each and every one of you and your children. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to volunteer with the PTO. See you at school!
